The female praying mantis often bites off and eats the head of the male during copulation. As the male is smaller than the female, he is easy prey. What is not often known is that at the evolutionary level, this act which may seem barbaric to us is actually an advantage. Indeed, when the female bites off her mate’s head, this provokes a reaction that causes the male to ejaculate a greater quantity of semen. Therefore, the chances of fertilization are better for the female!
